Coffee was first introduced in Kenya by the Scottish Mission in the year 1893 in Kibwezi area. Coffee did well in Kibwezi but did much better in the Central highlands when it was introduced in 1896 due to the climatic conditions. The coffees from Africa are the most distinctive because the coffee growing areas are blessed with right altitude, soil conditions and temperatures. Hence varieties from these regions offer splendid acidity, good body and excellent flavors.
Kenya is a major producer of the best tea in the world. It has more than 110,000 hectares of land under tea. Tea is grown in the highlands where there is adequate rainfall and low temperatures.

Departing Nairobi in the morning, you drive to the central highlands and spend the day at Mboi Farm day learning about coffee and tea farming. Upon arrival, you are welcomed with a cup of morning tea/coffee and snacks. After familiarization with the host and a brief orientation of the farm, you begin your tour with a visit to the cowsheds. Here you can try out your hand at milking and feeding fodder to the cows.
After milking, you enter the coffee farm. Guests will see where some of the world’s finest coffee comes from and how it is grown. Later at the farmhouse, you can participate in grading, roasting and grinding some of this coffee for use in the farm (Kahawa chungu). From the coffee farm, you head to the tea section.
Along the way, you pass by the Muratina tree which was used to make traditional Kikuyu brew. You will see how the brew was made with honey or sugar cane sap and when the host is not looking, you can steal a sip and know how it tastes. You will also pass by the Kikuyu traditional hut which will take you back in time to an era before the first European explorer had set foot in Africa.
Upon arrival at the tea farm, we get straight to work by putting on the picking basket (Kigara). You will be taught how it is picked. Picking makes all the difference and it gives Kenyan tea its famed taste of quality. The average tea picker makes about 20 kilos in a day. After lunch, you can plant a tree at the farm and then head off for a stroll into a local village, if time allows. You then proceed to a lodge for dinner and overnight.
